Getting Started with AssisT
Learn how to install and set up AssisT, the adaptive accessibility Chrome extension.
Installation
AssisT is available as a Chrome extension. Here’s how to get started:
From Chrome Web Store
- Visit the AssisT Chrome Web Store page (coming soon)
- Click “Add to Chrome”
- Confirm the installation when prompted
- The AssisT icon will appear in your browser toolbar
Manual Installation (Development)
If you want to install the development version:
- Clone the repository from GitHub
- Run
npm installto install dependencies - Run
npm run buildto build the extension - Open Chrome and navigate to
chrome://extensions - Enable “Developer mode” in the top right
- Click “Load unpacked” and select the
distfolder
First Steps
Opening the Extension
Click the AssisT icon in your Chrome toolbar to open the popup interface. From here you can:
- Toggle features on/off
- Adjust settings
- Access voice commands
- View keyboard shortcuts
Quick Feature Overview
- Text-to-Speech: Highlight any text and click the speaker icon, or use the keyboard shortcut
- Voice Commands: Say “Hey AssisT” followed by a command (when enabled)
- Reading Modes: Click the reading mode icon to toggle dyslexia-friendly text formatting
Recommended Settings
For the best experience, we recommend:
- Enable Voice Commands: Great for hands-free operation
- Set Your Preferred Voice: Choose a TTS voice that works for you
- Choose a User Profile: Select from 9 neurodivergent-optimized profiles
- Customize Keyboard Shortcuts: Set shortcuts that work for your workflow
